Cambridge Assessment International Examination’s goals for its lower levels science courses include:

To enable students to:

  • develop a positive attitude towards science that encourages enjoyment, confidence and curiosity
  • understand that living things are made of cells and that organisms can be grouped and identified in different ways
  • recognise the role of microorganisms in ecosystems, food webs and decay
  • understand that all materials are made of particles and use this idea to explain states of matter and changes of state
  • describe elements, compounds, mixtures and simple chemical reactions, including acids and alkalis
  • explore how forces, gravity and motion affect objects on Earth and in space
  • understand how energy is stored, transferred and transformed in simple systems
  • investigate sound and electricity and describe how they behave in everyday situations
  • understand Earth’s structure and the processes that shape our planet
  • develop practical and investigative skills by collecting data, identifying patterns and drawing conclusions
  • communicate scientific ideas clearly using appropriate language, diagrams and graphs
  • appreciate how scientific knowledge develops over time and how it is used in society and industry
  • build a strong foundation for further study in science
