This is where problems often begin. Students can choose this course negatively, because they do not want to study literature. They are often misguided: it is NOT a soft option! Students would be unwise to contemplate this course unless they have scored a B or higher at IGCSE Language.

Again, there are two papers. The first tests analytical skills and the ability to explain language choices. There is usually a choice of two questions from three options, across prose, poetry and drama. Students read, analyse and write their responses as an argument in essay form. Knowledge of language terminology and the skill of marshalling analytical observations into an argument are key.

The second paper is a test of writing. Accuracy and variety are rewarded. Writing well only comes with constant practice, so the exam should be a culmination of a year’s writing activity.

To do well in this course, students should be prepared to read extensively and practise their writing every week.
