Yr 9 & 10 Reading and Writing
- Description

Understanding exactly what we read and being able to express our thoughts in writing are the absolutely bedrock skills of school. ALL subjects depend on those two key skills, whether it be understanding a maths problem, writing up a science experiment or arguing a case in a formal essay in Social Studies or English. Therefore, it is vital that students focus on these skills to enable them to make progress across all subjects.
Improving these skills will enhance students’ readiness for their IGCSE or NCEA exams in year 11 and beyond.
By the end of their school careers, as they enter adult life, students will need a working vocabulary of about 15,000 words. Each subject has its own specific terminology, which must be understood and used. Their school years are when they will be learning to do both.
This course aims to enhance and improve students’ ability to read closely and understand a wide variety of texts. It also focusses on their ability to express their ideas in a concise, accurate and structured way. It builds on the progress the students should be making in their English classes at school.
